Out and about around Adare

Adare is an attractive base from which to explore mid-west Ireland. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and close to the cities of Cork, Clare and Kerry, it offers sight-seeing, country sports and urban entertainment all within the immediate vicinity. If you're planning a visit to Ireland's prettiest village then don't leave without experiencing one of these exciting day trips.

Celtic Theme Park and Gardens: Kids will love the Celtic Theme Park and Gardens, which lies less than ten miles from Adare village and combines historical interest with botanical beauty. See stone circles, ring forts, dolmens and a holy well, admire the variety of native fauna, and end your tour by taking in the views from the park's cosy tea rooms.

Glinn Castle: Located in the midst of a 500 acre wood on the banks of the River Shannon, Glinn Castle's mysterious and beautiful location adds to its ancient charm. An elaborate Gothic Revival façade, imposing rooms and an exquisite formal garden combine to attract the visitor - while mystery is added by a collection of eccentric portraits and, tantalisingly, a secret passage which runs from the library bookcase to the hall.

Lough Gur: One of Ireland's most important ancient sites lies within easy reach of Adare. Lough Gur is the location of a Neolithic settlement, and the archaeological remains of this ancient civilisation can still be seen today. The on-site interpretative centre, with its collection of facsimiles and audio-visual presentation, helps explain the workings of Irish society some 12,000 years ago.

Limerick City: Limerick was founded by the Vikings in the 9th century, and today it's an intriguing combination of ancient and modern. There are plenty of bars, eateries and cosy pubs for the visitor's delectation, as well as a number of interesting historical sites to see. If you're visiting Limerick on a day trip from Adare, then don't miss a look inside King John's Castle, a fascinating Norman fortification at the heart of the old town. Other must-sees include the Treaty Stone, St Mary's Cathedral, the Milk Market and the Hunt Museum.

Dublin: If you have more than one day to spare then don't miss out on a trip to Ireland's capital. Approximately 2.5 hours drive from Adare, Dublin is the country's social and cultural heart, and a great place to enjoy traditional Irish food, beer and craic. The city tends to be expensive, but if you're staying overnight then book in advance through a specialist travel website such as Octopus Travel for some great deals on Dublin hotels. With so much to see and do, it's a good idea to put at least 48 hours aside for a fulfilling trip to the capital.
