The name Adare is derived from Ath Dara, meaning 'the ford of the oak' and was historically a crossing point on the River Maigue.
Renowned as Ireland's prettiest village, Adare is designated as a Heritage Town by the Irish Government. The N21is the main road through Adare from Limerick to Tralee, although plans for a bypass are to be completed in 2009.
Economy
Adare is a major tourist destination with many tours of Ireland stopping off in Adare. The local heritage centre gives a deep insight into the history of the village and also hosts a number of craft shops and a restaurant. Adare is a very popular wedding and conference venue and has recently become a major golf destination hosting the Irish Open at the Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort. There is one other course in the village open since 1900 and also a pitch & putt course.
There are two equestrian centres at Clonshire and Adare Manor. Adare is home to a number of worls-renowned stables. Adare has a railway line passing through but has been closed for many years. The old station house is still standing today.

Sport
Gaelic Games, especially hurling is popular in Adare. The hurling team finally won its first County Hurling Championship in 2001 and successfully defended their title in 2002 only to be denied a 3 in a row in 2003 after narrowly losing the county final to great rivals and neighbours Patrickswell.
In gaelic football Adare haven't traditionally been successful, however in 2002 they reached their first county final, where they drew the first game, and lost the replay by just a point. They now compete at a very high standard at senior level.
The village regularly enjoys success at underage level in both codes.
The local soccer team is known as Adare United AFC. They currently play at Deer Park Field, situated just off the Blackabbey Road in the village. Formed in 1937 they are one of the oldest Association Football teams outside of Limerick City and recently celebrated their 70th Anniversary. Adare Utd participate in the Limerick Desmond Schoolboys/Girls League at Under 8, U10, U12, U14 and U16 age groups and also in the Limerick Desmond League at Junior (adult) level. The 2006/07 Season saw the club form its first ever ladies team.
Golf is also popular in Adare. There are two 18 hole golf courses in the village. The Adare Golf Club is on the grounds of the Adare Manor and the other is actually called Adare Manor Golf club is on the northside of the river Maigue. From 2007 to 2009 the Irish Open will be held at Adare Golf Club.

Airplane
Adare is 45 minutes drive from Shannon Internatinal Airport. Flights from the United States land every morning and Ryanair flights serve most European countries.
Shannon Airport
Car Adare is located on the N21 which is the main road from Limerick City to Tralee. It takes approximately 20 mins from Limerick, 45 minutes from Shannon airport and 1 hour from Tralee and Killarney. Adare is to be bypassed by the year end 2009.
Bus
Bus Eireann stops in Adare and takes approximately 30 minutes from Colbert Station in Limerick City. Buses leave on the halh hour every hour. For Kerry and the south the bus stops outside the Post Office. For Liomerick and Shannon airport the bus stops outside the Heritage Center. Click here for times and fares.
